Frequently Asked Questions About the Gmail Migration

Why are we switching?

With Gmail, we'll gain the benefits of a robust and innovative feature set, lower infrastructure and support costs, and a significant increase in storage capacity. Public School Districts and Colleges who have made the switch to Gmail realized the following benefits:

  • Boosting Student Motivation and Performance

  • Preparation for the Real World (real-time collaboration, cloud computing)

  • Bridging the Digital Divide - free software and cloud storage

What do I need to do to prepare for this migration?

Nothing at this time.  Please read the questions & answers below at your convenience.

Will my school email address change?

Yes.  Your email address will be changed to [email protected]

For example, Jon Smith’s email address will change from: [email protected] to [email protected]

What happens when someone tries to email me at my old ofsd.k12.mo.us email address?

Your messages will be automatically delivered to your Gmail account..

Can I still use my Outlook application?

We strongly recommend that you avoid logging in to your Outlook application. However, you can open it to view previously stored email messages, calendar events, and address book contacts:

Remember that you should be using Google’s applications to manage your email, calendar, and contacts from this point forward.

What You'll Need to Do

Log in to your Gmail account and begin using it for all of your email correspondence and calendar scheduling. Depending on how you currently use Outlook, you might also need to complete the following tasks:

  • Recreate your Outlook email rules (if you use rules) using the "filters" feature in Google Mail.  (Note: Not many staff members use Outlook rules.)

  • Create your email signature in Gmail if you use an email signature in Outlook.

Can I access my Gmail account now?

Yes. In fact, most teachers within the district are already using Gmail & Google Apps with their students.

How long will I still be able to access my ofsd.k12.mo.us  account?

You'll still be able to log in to your Outlook account to view your old email, calendar, and personal contacts until January 1st, 2016.

What happens if I have my own personal Gmail account?

This migration will not affect your personal Gmail account.

What if I am already using my ofr5.com Gmail account?

You can continue to use it without any interruption.

How can I get help if I am having trouble with any of this?

Simply submit a Help Desk Ticket and a member of our technology support team will help you.
